How to Choose a Spare Ball
A spare ball is a different tool with a different job. Here's what actually matters when choosing one, and why it's not just a weaker strike ball.
A lot of bowlers treat their spare ball as whatever's left over in the bag rather than a deliberately chosen piece of equipment. A dedicated spare ball actually has a different job than a strike ball, and it's worth choosing accordingly.
Predictability Over Power
A strike ball is chosen for how it reacts to oil and pattern. A spare ball is chosen almost entirely for predictability, going straight, minimal hook, consistent roll from shot to shot, since the goal is hitting a single pin, not maximizing pin carry through a full rack.
Plastic Still Has a Place
A plastic or low-differential ball, largely unaffected by lane oil, remains one of the most reliable choices for spare shooting precisely because its reaction barely changes as the pattern breaks down over a game or a series.
The Takeaway
A spare ball isn't a lesser strike ball, it's a specialized tool built around predictability rather than hook potential. Choosing one deliberately, rather than defaulting to whatever's left in the bag, can meaningfully improve your spare conversion rate.
