Why Spare Shooting Wins More Matches Than Strikes
Strikes get the highlight reel, but spares quietly decide most close matches. Here's why they deserve more of your practice time than they usually get.
Ask most bowlers what they need to work on and the answer is almost always something about their strike ball. Ask them to track how many matches they've actually lost to missed spares instead, and the honest answer is usually a lot more than they'd like to admit.
The Math Favors Spares
A missed single-pin spare in a close match often costs more than an extra strike would have gained, because it directly removes pins from a frame rather than simply adding to one. Over a full series, consistent spare conversion has a larger and more reliable effect on total score than an occasional extra strike.
Spares Are More Practicable
Strike shots depend heavily on lane condition and carry, both of which are partly outside your control. A ten-pin or a 2-4-5 is a fixed target that responds the same way to the same fundamentals every time, which makes spare shooting one of the most trainable parts of the entire game.
